![]() The country's transition to coal as a principal energy source was more or less complete by the end of the 17th century. ![]() Energy Deforestation in England had led to a shortage of wood for lumber and fuel starting in the 16th century. A great many rural workers and families were forced to migrate to the cities to become industrial laborers. The enclosure movement, which converted common-use pasture land into private property, contributed to this trend toward market-oriented agriculture. Poorer peasants had a harder time making ends meet through traditional farming. This same combination of factors also brought about a shift toward large-scale commercial farming. The result was a huge increase in yields, capable of feeding a rapidly growing population. Progress was also made in crop rotation and land use, soil health, development of new crop varieties, and animal farming. These included new types of equipment, such as the seed drill. Several factors came together in 18th-century Britain to bring about a major increase in agricultural productivity. Agriculture Western European farming methods had been improving slowly over the centuries. Below are some key examples of the important changes that occurred. ![]() A huge variety of new tools and machines were first introduced during this period. The global wellness economy is estimated to be worth $4 trillion. We Instagram how proud we are of this, and we follow Goop and Well+Good, and we drop 40 bucks on an exercise class because there are healing crystals in the floor…. So addiction has always fascinated me, and also how outsiders view and cope with a loved one’s addiction. In the past, I briefly spoke about drug and alcohol addiction being a large part of my close family member’s lives. Let me start off by saying, I am not an alcoholic (I did not finish this book thinking now I’m an alcoholic either). I do not read a lot of self-help books, especially about alcoholism, but after reading the premise for this one and the reviews, it sounded appealing to me. Alright, are you wondering how I came across this book? If you asked, reviews and posts kept coming up on my Goodreads and Instagram feed about this book often recently, and it’s because I’m pretty sure the paperback version just came out. ![]() ![]() ![]() Speech was, in the words of voice director Jack Fletcher on the DVD commentary track for the Season 3 episode “Utopia or Deuteranopia?,” “‘ a kind of italicized or an underlying way of saying what they were saying with their facial gestures.” Dialogue, then, became a complementary element to the mystery and appeal inherent in each episode. To maintain the spirit of the show with a newly voiced, and occasionally quite verbose incarnation of Aeon, Æon Flux relied on double, sometimes even triple entendres. This emphasis on artful ambiguity and rhetorical sleight-of-hand remained when Chung made the leap to fully voiced characters and storylines with a final season of half-hour episodes. “I want them to be as clear a portrayal of an ambiguous event as possible.” “My stories have ambiguity, so I don’t want them to be ambiguous portrayals of an ambiguous event,” Chung said in an interview with Art of the Title back in 2017. Instead, the animator speaks to the audience through designed environments, dynamic camera angles, and elaborate, expressive actions and gestures. Spy-like action series, and combining such far-flung points of inspiration as Franco-Belgian comics, cyberpunk fiction, and Gnosticism, the original 12-minute pilot and its five-episode second season are nearly absent of spoken dialogue. What exactly is Aeon aiming to accomplish here? What did these soldiers do to provoke such an attack? Who exactly are the “good” guys and who are the “bad” guys in this situation?Įverything about Æon Flux revolves around subverting expectations and inspiring the viewer to scrutinize beyond the surface of a first impression. It turns out, our heroine might not in fact be a heroine at all. A group of custodians with mops looks on from the sidelines as Aeon marches forward, shooting off-screen with reckless abandon. Surrounding him are other bodies, too many to count, lying in a massive pool of blood and heaped into dozens of mountains of corpses. Acting as a grisly counterpoint to the action movie heroics of the first, Chung frames the episode from the vantage point of one of Aeon’s innumerable and anonymous adversaries, opening with a dying man experiencing a Steambot Willie-esque hallucination as he succumbs to his wounds. Æon Flux’s second segment completely reverses the dynamics. Even the thunderous orchestral score was, according to series composer Drew Neumann, explicitly designed to deceive the audience by invoking John Williams’ Raiders of the Lost Ark theme … but “broken.” At first glance, the first two-minute segment appears to perpetuate the same tired conventions of so-called “adult” animation of which I would accuse the first season of Love, Death & Robots: an overreliance on surface-level violence and scantily clad sexual imagery in service of the male gaze. Premiering on MTV’s experimental animation variety show Liquid Television in 1991, Æon Flux follows a dominatrix-assassin as she shoots her way through winding corridors of a vast and seemingly impregnable complex while on an unspecified mission. More contemporary incarnations of the genre (including Love, Death,& Robots) could learn from the precedent that creator Peter Chung and his team set nearly 30 years ago. Ballard and Harlan Ellison, and the addition of Jennifer Yuh Nelson ( Kung Fu Panda 2), who joins series creator Tim Miller ( Deadpool) as co-executive producer and directs “Pop Squad,” one of this season’s standout installments, all seems to have helped the series to grow.īut there’s still the issue of classifying Love, Death & Robots as “adult” animation, a description that, however well meaning, inadvertently frames the medium as one intended “for kids.” How then do we even go about defining “adult” animation, let alone good “adult” animation? My definition comes from one particular series: Peter’s Chung’s avant-garde sci-fi series Æon Flux. Luckily, Love, Death & Robots season 2 improves upon the first, with eight shorts that cut down on the gratuitous nudity and violence and are speculative in a way that’s actually mature. There was nothing beneath their shiny surfaces. ![]() ![]() For a series that claims maturity, the majority of season 1’s otherwise beautifully animated shorts felt like exercises in adolescent hyper-fixation, with only blood, boobs, and gore as a thematic through-line. I enjoyed some of the first wave of episodes, especially Albert Mielgo’s “The Witness” and Robert Valley’s “Zima Blue,” but the sales pitch of animation for “mature, messed-up” adults made me cringe. My reaction to a second season of Netflix’s animated anthology series Love, Death & Robots was preemptive exhaustion. ![]() ![]() ![]() The band selected different parts of that tape when played backwards, editing them and re-recording on top of it, adding a different melody plus accordion, a one-note bass and jarring guitar. ![]() The song was built on a loop in reverse of a brass part with drums which the group previously arranged a year before for a cover of John Cale's "Gun". The tolex on the earliest versions in this era was pinkish brown and rough textured. The shift from tweed to Tolex occurred in limited production in 1960. The brown panel amps originally featured a dark maroon or "oxblood" grillcloth, which was changed to "wheat" in 1962-63. ![]() The name 'brown panel' stems from the brown-colored control panels, common to both the brown- and cream/blonde- Tolex-covered amps. Fender generally stopped using the twill covering in 1960, though the Harvard was still covered in twill until 1963, and the Champ until 1964.Īt the beginning of the "tweed" era, Fender constructed many of its cabinets in "TV front" style, amps which bore a strong resemblance to TVs of the time. The amps made during this period were a considerable leap forward for Fender, and they are often praised for their sound and their circuitry. This is incorrectly called tweed because of its feel and appearance (actual tweed is a rough woolen fabric). This phase saw the company drape their amplifiers in a cloth covering, which consists of varnished cotton twill. In 1948 Fender entered a new phase of amplifier construction dubbed 'the tweed phase'. The production of these amps ceased in 1948, however, the names of the amps became enduring ones for Fender. It was the largest of the trio featuring Jensen 15” field-coil speaker and 6 tubes delivering 25 watts of power. The rarest of all the original 'woodie' series was the Professional. It was the most popular amp of this era, with most amps surviving from this era today being Deluxes. The Deluxe was a larger amp with a Jensen 10” field-coil speaker and five tubes in a 14-watt design. This amp had no controls as it was designed for the guitar to solely control the volume and was simply turned on by plugging/unplugging into the wall plug. The Princeton was a small six watt amp with an 8" Jensen field-coil speaker. These amps were the Princeton, the Deluxe and the Professional. They were constructed out of spare hardwood held by the Fender company at the time and were hence given the name 'woodie' later on by collectors. The first amplifiers made in-house by the Fender Electric Instrument Company were a significant step up in size and function to the small, nameless amps that preceded them, however, they didn't have technological advancements such as circuit boards in their designs. They are all very rare today and few have survived. They were made in three sizes, 1×8" (one 8-inch speaker), 1×10", and 1×15". The amplifiers were housed in a steel case and most were finished in a "gray crinkle" finish that was baked in the Kauffman family oven.
